1. OpenStreetMap
RootPlus uses data from
OpenStreetMap:
speed and red-light cameras (highway=speed_camera and
enforcement relations), average-speed sections
(enforcement=average_speed), fuel stations
(amenity=fuel) and charging points
(amenity=charging_station).
© OpenStreetMap contributors. The data is available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0; see openstreetmap.org/copyright.
Missing or wrong data can be corrected by anyone directly in OpenStreetMap: openstreetmap.org/fixthemap.
2. The RootPlus OpenStreetMap Layer
RootPlus imports these OpenStreetMap features for European countries in areas of 0.5° × 0.5°, about once a week and when an area is first requested. It keeps only the tags it needs (type, position, direction, speed limit, name, operator, brand, opening hours, fuel types and sockets), removes contributor names, user IDs and changeset IDs, and marks cameras that disappeared from OpenStreetMap as missing. Average-speed sections are checked for a single start and end or one continuous chain of roads. RootPlus adds none of its own data to this layer.
This derived database is publicly used by RootPlus and is available under the ODbL 1.0. Every area can be downloaded in OpenStreetMap JSON format:
-
https://api.rootplus.eu/v1/cameras/tile.php?t=LAT_LON— cameras, fuel stations and charging points; -
…&layer=sections— average-speed sections.
LAT is floor((latitude + 90) × 2) and
LON is floor((longitude + 180) × 2); for
Zagreb that is t=271_391. A complete copy can also be
requested at privacy@rootplus.eu.
3. Official Sources
Spain: fixed cameras and average-speed sections of the Dirección General de Tráfico, published as open data with the attribution “Fuente: DGT”.
Official data is a separate layer
(…&layer=official); each record carries its
source, licence and attribution. Where an official camera and an
OpenStreetMap camera describe the same device, the official one is
shown.
4. RootPlus User Reports
Cameras, police checks and other road events reported by RootPlus users are a separate RootPlus database. They are not part of the OpenStreetMap layer and are not licensed under the ODbL.
Reports are stored with a pseudonymous identifier, shown to other users without names and deleted when the reporting account is deleted. See the Terms of Use (section 11) and the Privacy Policy (sections 3 and 13).

6. Camera Warnings and the Law
Camera warnings follow local law. RootPlus shows and announces no speed cameras, average-speed sections or police reports in Germany, Switzerland, Cyprus and North Macedonia, and only general danger zones without an exact position in France. Near a border the stricter rule applies. The driver must always follow road signs and applicable law.
